A simple log beacon lit by bonfires was first built here around 1739 by Vitus Bering's Second Kamchatka Expedition near a site called Vaua, later used by the expedition's ships Sv. Petr and Sv. Pavel as a navigational reference. Successive wooden lighthouses, known as Dalniy, were built in 1816 and 1850; the station's keepers helped defend Petropavlovsk during the 1854 Anglo-French naval attack. A cast-iron tower, built 1892-1897 under engineer K. I. Leopold using materials shipped from San Francisco and Japan, began operating in 1897 and survived Japanese shelling in 1905. The lighthouse was substantially reconstructed in 1952 and again in 1966-1968, retaining its original cast-iron tower; it now shows a white eclipsing light visible to 25 miles.
