Окончил мореходное отделение Архангельского торгово-мореходного училища в 1909 г. Обучался вместе с будущим известным мореплавателем А.С. Кучиным. В 1910–1914 гг. работал на гидрографических судах. Во время Первой мировой войны (1914–1918) служил в Кронштадте.
