About the author:  Bashmakov Pavel Ivanovich (1890–1942)

Born on Zhuzhmuy Island, Onega Bay in the White Sea, in the family of a lighthouse keeper, Ivan Pavlovich Bashmakov. Hydrographer sailor. Explorer of the seas of the Arctic Ocean. He graduated from the nautical department of the Arkhangelsk Trade and Maritime School in 1909. He studied together with the future famous navigator A.S. Kuchin. In 1910–1914 worked on hydrographic vessels. During the First World War (1914–1918) he served in Kronstadt. In Arkhangelsk he worked in the Directorate of Lighthouses and the White Sea Flight Station in the 1920s. - at UBEKO-North (Office for Ensuring the Safety of Navigation in the Northern Seas). He taught navigation, pilotage, oceanography and meteorology at the Arkhangelsk Maritime College (1921–1940). Author of the Atlas of Maps of All Polar Expeditions. The strait between the Arctic islands of Hoffmann and Becker is named after Bashmakov
