There are lighthouse lovers in many countries.
Just as everyone has their own lighthouses in life, everyone comes to their passion for lighthouses in their own way.
for some these are romantic memories of the sea, vacations, meetings and acquaintances.
Like Shakespeare
“Love is a beacon raised above the storm, not fading in the darkness and fog, Love is the star by which a sailor determines his place in the ocean.”
Some served in the navy and for them lighthouses are a symbol reminiscent of returning to their native lands after a long voyage, unforgettable countries, storms overcome in pitch darkness.
Hence the proverb “The most desirable light for a sailor is the fire of his native lighthouse.”
Someone appreciates them as expressive elements of architecture or symbols of eternal values
This is what Konstantin Paustovsky said about it: “Lighthouses are shrines of the seas. They belong to everyone and are inviolable, like the plenipotentiaries of the powers."
Therefore, it is natural that people who are passionate about lighthouses would like to have a piece of these memories in their home, symbolically reminiscent of these events, impressions, and time.
The project "Lighthouse. Virtual Museum of Lighthouses of the World" is one of the largest projects on lighthouses in Russia, and the very idea of lighthouse models arose quite a long time ago, developed and supported by the keen interest of like-minded people - lighthouse lovers with whom we met.
For us, as for many, our acquaintance with lighthouse models began with the acquisition of souvenirs on trips and at fairs - simple products made of plastic, metal, ceramics, wood, only schematically, resembling a lighthouse.
What is symbolic is that some of the first real lighthouses were also wooden from logs without obvious distinctive characteristics
And like the structures of lighthouses, souvenir crafts have evolved over time from simple conventional products to complex models of lighthouses with lighthouse dioramas, towns, precise light codes, using microelectronics, and landscape elements.
All this allows us to convey the unique spirit of lighthouses, because... Some lighthouses are a whole recognizable complex of landscape and architectural elements, and only with the help of model dioramas can this atmosphere be at least partially conveyed.
Let us immediately define the concept of model. The model retains all the main functions of the original, only on a reduced scale.
It is also worth distinguishing between layout and model. A model is only an outwardly similar object, maybe even quite realistic, but it does not retain the functions and properties of the original. For example, a movie set in the form of a model of a tank.
You can make a model model, but not vice versa.
Lighthouse modeling is very developed abroad, but when we decided to develop this area in Russia, we were faced with an almost complete lack of choice
It turned out that the professional modeling direction of lighthouses did not develop purposefully. There was a general category - port facilities, which included lighthouses.
As usually happens when there is no choice, various directions arise for handicrafts made on the knees with non-compliance with the scale and proportions of the parts.
As a rule, not from specialized materials for modeling, but from improvised materials: pieces of plastic, toothpicks, bottles, cardboard
Lighthouses in Russia are a fairly closed area and it is almost impossible to find an up-to-date drawing of a real lighthouse. Therefore, such “masters”, as a rule, take photographs, stamps, postcards as a basis and make the product by eye.
Design is usually limited to drawings on a piece of paper and, as a result, a large percentage of defects and inaccuracies when bringing such a product to fruition.
The result is souvenir products that essentially have nothing in common with models and layouts, and often with reality, reflecting the fantasies of the author. A kind of fantasy turrets, which are often sold as models of lighthouses.
We have been looking for quite a long time for craftsmen who could fulfill our requirements with passion and professionalism. Having extensive experience working with modern computer-aided design technologies, modern specialized equipment and materials. Professionally proficient in complex modeling and hand-painting technologies. And most importantly, motivated for further development and work on the lighthouse theme.
As a result, we were lucky to find such a team and begin to actively develop the modeling direction. Moreover, the very first models were of a high level, despite the fact that the lighthouse theme was quite new for the craftsmen.
For us, this has become a constant discovery of possibilities from creating very detailed models and dioramas in “large” scales of 1:100, to relatively small scales of 1:300 and with high-quality detailed work, which is not easy to do at such sizes.
And even on a small scale, these are no longer toy turrets, but real working electric models with precise light codes that meet all model requirements.
Moreover, just as new technologies come to lighthouses, in lighthouse models, thanks to modern technologies, it is possible to create inexpensive, high-quality models.
Since the more accessible the models are for purchase, the more the lighthouse theme will be popularized in Russia.
Indeed, in many families, models become part of a developing collection, which is important for many children. Thus, from childhood, it is possible to instill an interest in the history of the Russian navy, the sea, and adventures.
The main focus of our project "Lighthouse. Virtual Museum of Lighthouses of the World" is aimed at popularizing the lighthouses of Russia, because this interesting topic with a rich history is practically inaccessible to the general public in Russia, and even more so to lighthouse lovers from abroad who are interested in Russian lighthouses
Therefore, among other things, for some models we make short videos using historical material, in the genre of a walk through the lighthouse, in which, “travelling” through the model, the lighthouse and its history are briefly and unobtrusively shown.
All videos are publicly available and will eventually be provided with English subtitles.
